PC Bottleneck Calculator

Compare CPU and GPU balance across 1080p, 1440p and 4K, with game, refresh-rate and memory context.

A GPU bottleneck is often normal

In a graphically demanding game, seeing the GPU around 95–100% utilization is usually a sign that the graphics card is being used properly. The useful question is whether that limit keeps you below the FPS or image quality you want.

A card can be perfectly suitable at 1080p and struggle at 4K because resolution changes how much work has to be rendered for every frame.

High GPU use + target met

Usually fine. You are using the graphics card you paid for.

High GPU use + target missed

Reduce GPU-heavy settings or compare a faster card.

Low GPU use + high CPU pressure

The graphics card may be waiting for the processor.

What to change before buying a new GPU

Start with resolution scale, ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects and other settings that are expensive on the GPU. Upscaling technologies can also reduce rendering load when the game supports them.

Check temperatures and clock behavior as well. A hot card that is throttling can look like an underpowered GPU even when the model itself should be capable of more.

Frequently asked questions

Is 99% GPU usage bad?

Usually not. In demanding games it often means the GPU is being fully used. It matters when performance or temperatures are not where you want them.

Does lowering resolution reduce a GPU bottleneck?

Yes, lower resolution generally reduces GPU work and can raise FPS, although it may expose a CPU limit instead.

Can VRAM cause stuttering?

Yes. When a game exceeds available VRAM, texture quality, streaming behavior and frame times can suffer depending on the engine and system.

Continue checking your build

Keep exploring: check the CPU side with our CPU bottleneck calculator, learn how much VRAM you need for gaming, and troubleshoot games with low GPU usage but low FPS.

Before you upgrade, confirm your graphics card model and memory against the official NVIDIA GeForce graphics card specifications.

Accuracy note:

A PC does not have one permanent bottleneck percentage. The limiting component can change with the game, resolution, graphics settings, frame-rate target, drivers, cooling and background activity. Use calculator results as practical guidance and confirm important upgrade decisions with real in-game monitoring.
